isn't the president supposed to be in hawaii on monday? >> i don't think he is going to be in hawaii on monday. i think they will be here for at least all of next week. let's see what happens on christmas eve. you have to get the legislation down on paper and take a look at it and have a roll call. there is a fast track they can do in a speedy fast track. they still need time and they are far apart on a lot of these issues. will they kick the ball down the road? that's obviously possible. they often do that in a situation like this. especially when they want to be home for christmas and new year's. that puts an enormous amount of pressure on the men and women in the house and the the house and senate. let's see if it's enough to score a deal. brooke, you know this, our viewers know this. if nothing happens, if no legislation is enacted, everyone's taxes is going on and there will be significant spending cuts, national security spending. that's going to happen until there's legislation. so the pressure is clearly enormous. >> the pressure i

so congress has broken camp for the holidays, the president has gone to hawaii on vacation. white house correspondent brianna keilar tells us no one is really talking, anyone, to get this solved. at least not here at christmas. >> reporter: senate democrats are not in conversations right now with senate republicans or with house republicans. and this is problematic obviously because in order to avoid the fiscal cliff, you would need to find some sort of deal that would make it through the senate and the house and that would mean democratic and republican support. right now, all eyes on the senate because they will reconvene on the 27th that is thursday. and senate majority leader harry reid, it is up to him really to cobble together something that can get some of that support. right now the white house is still supporting a threshold of $250,000 back to their initial starting point for tax rates going up for those making more than that. but you can imagine, hala, that will be very hard for some republicans, maybe even some democrats to sign on to. >> right, and, you know, fo

obviously, december 21st, when congress is supposed to head home, when the president is supposed to head to hawaii on his christmas vacation, all of this could slide. the real deadline is the end of the year, but they really need to strike a deal by christmas. and even doing that, have been waiting as long as that is something that could really roil the market. so it's also important that they do it before then, ted. >> yeah, well, hopefully the threat of missing their vacation will push them to work harder. >> it works sometimes. >> sure. brianna keilar for us this morning at the white house. brianna, thank you. this morning, some calming words on syria amid fears that the crumbling regime there could unleash chemical weapons on its own people, just days after the u.s. and other countries warned embattled president bashar al assad against such action. defense secretary leon panetta says syria may be backing away from that threat. here is what panetta said earlier this morning aboard a flight to kuwait city. >> we haven't seen anything new indicating, you know, any aggressive steps to move forward
